Welcome to NHS' Communications Frontier
In the last twenty plus years communication methods and information access have changed dramatically. Few of us growing up in the 70s & 80s could have predicted the enormity of these changes. Growing up with LP recordings, 8-tracks, and cassettes, magazines and newspapers, five television channels, and the encyclopia worked thirty plus years ago, but the world we live in today moves at a much faster pace largely due to the rise of the Information Age. As with all change, there is good and bad. As we progressed through the Industrial Revolution we saw significant increases in personal wealth, greater security in retirement, easier and more immediate access to goods and services and so much more. However, we also had to deal with child labor practices, discriminatory hiring practices, less than ideal labor practices, massive environmental damage, and the loss of the world as we knew it. This is the world our children are growing up in and they need the tools to understand it, shape it, and make it better. NHS' communications courses are desinged to help students understand this ever changing and amazing world we live in.
The Information Age = Collaboration!
Whether your child is in Multi Media, Going Digital, Web Design, Emerging Technologies, or Creative Writing, they will all experience a Project Based Learning (PBL) environment. After roughly two weeks, most students will be confidently off and running on their own projects. Generally students feel more like stake holders using the PBL model and therefore tend to willingly engage with the course material. When PBL is at its best, most students feel like they are simply having fun.
Benifits of PBL
- Deeper knowledge of subject matter
- Students are more likely to retain knowledge
- Students develop confidence and self direction
- Students hone organizational and research skills
- Students communicate better with their peers and adults
- Students often work with community organizations and businesses
- Students often see greater revelance in their work
- Students tend to thrive on the greater flexibility offered through PBL
- Students must apply problem solving skills daily
"Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while working in small collaborative groups". (edutopia)
